Existují dvě možnosti vytváření a aktualizace databází.
Jedním z nich je vytvořit databázi externě, poté ji umístit do složky aktiv projektu a odtud zkopírovat celou databázi. To je mnohem rychlejší, pokud má databáze hodně tabulek a dalších komponent. Upgrady se spouštějí změnou čísla verze databáze v souboru res/values/strings.xml. Upgrady by pak byly provedeny vytvořením nové databáze externě, nahrazením staré databáze ve složce aktiv novou databází, uložením staré databáze do interního úložiště pod jiným názvem, zkopírováním nové databáze ze složky aktiv do interního úložiště, přenesením všech dat ze staré databáze (která byla dříve přejmenována) do nové databáze a nakonec smazání staré databáze. Databázi můžete původně vytvořit pomocí pluginu SQLite Manager FireFox k provedení příkazů SQL vytvoření.
Druhou možností je vytvořit databázi interně ze souboru SQL. Není to tak rychlé, ale zpoždění by bylo pro uživatele pravděpodobně nepostřehnutelné, pokud by databáze obsahovala pouze několik tabulek. Upgrady se spouštějí změnou čísla verze databáze v souboru res/values/strings.xml. Upgrady by pak byly provedeny zpracováním souboru SQL upgrade. Data v databázi zůstanou nezměněna, kromě případů, kdy je její kontejner odstraněn, například vypuštěním tabulky.
